About this sales tax calculator
This sales tax calculator (also useful as a VAT/GST helper) supports both directions: adding tax to a net price, and reverse-calculating tax from a gross receipt.
How to use
- Choose Add tax or Tax included.
- Enter amount and tax rate.
- See net, tax, and gross values.
Formula
Tax = Net × (Rate ÷ 100) · Gross = Net + Tax
Net from gross = Gross ÷ (1 + Rate/100)
Worked examples
Example: $100 + 8.25% tax → tax $8.25 → total $108.25.
Tips
- Rates vary by city/state/country — confirm the local rate.
- Some goods are exempt or zero-rated under VAT/GST systems.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove sales tax from a total?
Divide the gross amount by (1 + rate/100). For $108.25 at 8.25%: 108.25 ÷ 1.0825 = $100 net.
