About this GPA calculator
A GPA calculator converts letter grades into grade points and weights them by credit hours. This matches the common US 4.0 scale used by many schools and universities.
How to use
- List your letter grades separated by commas.
- List matching credit hours in the same order.
- Read weighted GPA and quality points.
Formula
GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits)
Standard map: A=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0, B-=2.7, C+=2.3, C=2.0, C-=1.7, D+=1.3, D=1.0, D-=0.7, F=0.
Worked examples
Example: A (3), B+ (3), A- (4), B (3) → quality points 45.7 ÷ 13 credits ≈ 3.515 GPA.
Tips
- Some schools use different plus/minus scales — confirm your handbook.
- Weighted high-school GPAs (AP/IB) may exceed 4.0; this tool is unweighted 4.0.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good college GPA?
Competitive programs often look for 3.5+, but “good” depends on major, school, and goals. Focus on trend and mastery, not one number.
