About this tip calculator

A tip calculator removes mental math at the end of a meal. It is especially handy when splitting a check among friends or deciding between 15%, 18%, or 20% tip.

How to use

  1. Enter the pre-tip bill (after tax or before — follow local custom).
  2. Choose a tip percentage.
  3. Enter how many people are splitting.

Formula

Tip = Bill × (Tip% ÷ 100)
Total = Bill + Tip · Per person = Total ÷ People

Worked examples

Example: $86.50 bill, 18% tip, 2 people → tip $15.57, total $102.07, ≈ $51.04 each.

Tips

  • Common US restaurant tips: 15–20% for standard service.
  • Some regions include service charge — avoid double tipping.
  • For delivery, consider distance and order size, not only percentage.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on tax?

What is a standard tip percentage?

In many US restaurants, 18–20% is common for good service. Adjust for quality and local norms.
